Knee pain affects many people, especially as they age. However, focusing on scans alone won’t solve the problem. Here are three key points to remember: 1) Why we treat people, not images; 2) How knee degeneration is a natural process; and 3) Why strengthening exercises work.

1. Treating People, Not Images

Your MRI might show knee damage, but that doesn’t always reflect the pain you feel. Studies show that some people have major knee degeneration with little pain, while others have minor damage and a lot of discomfort. The key is to treat you, not just what appears in the scans【1】【2】.

2. Degeneration is Normal

Knee degeneration is part of getting older and doesn’t always mean you need surgery. As cartilage wears down, it’s completely normal, and not everyone with this condition feels pain【1】【3】. The important thing is to focus on improving your movement and daily comfort, not just on the results of your MRI【2】.

3. Strengthening Exercises: Your Best Option

Strengthening the muscles around the knee is one of the most effective treatments for reducing knee pain. It doesn’t matter if you use low-intensity or high-intensity programs—both can help【3】. Studies show that exercises targeting the quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and hips can improve knee function and reduce pain in people with osteoarthritis【1】【3】.

Conclusion

Knee pain doesn’t have to limit your life. By focusing on how you feel, understanding that knee degeneration is normal, and doing regular strengthening exercises, you can reduce pain and improve your movement without relying on surgery or invasive treatments.
