For certain conditions, surgery becomes necessary. This may result from trauma—such as a fracture—or from a mobility or pain issue that, over time, leads to functional impairment, preventing the patient from living normally.
Why Is Post-Operative Physiotherapy Essential?
After surgery, a period of immobilization is often required. For instance, in the case of a fracture, the standard approach is a six-week cast immobilization. But what are the consequences?
• Joint stiffness (ankylosis)
• Reduced flexibility
• Muscle weakness
• Loss of sensory function due to nerve involvement
Following surgery, a physiotherapist plays a crucial role in helping the patient regain mobility and manage pain progressively throughout the rehabilitation process.
Can I Do It Alone?
Some patients have refused physiotherapy and attempted to rehabilitate themselves. However, the main challenge is understanding the different rehabilitation phases. A physiotherapist guides you on when, how, and at what intensity to perform movements safely.
Post-operative pain and mobility restrictions can be intimidating. That’s why physiotherapy is designed to support patients step by step, ensuring they progress without exceeding their pain threshold. The goal is not just to recover joint mobility, flexibility, and strength, but also to restore functional independence, whether for daily activities or high-demand physical tasks like sports.
The Human Tissues Involved
Post-operative rehabilitation focuses on multiple systems:
• Muscles: Regaining strength and endurance
• Ligaments: Restoring stability
• Joints: Recovering full range of motion
• Nervous system: Addressing sensitivity and proprioception
